The Project

Mazda is a Japanese manufacturer that like to showcase their challenger spirit and are starting to compete in the premium sector of the automotive industry with the launch of the all-new Mazda CX-60 . Mazda cars are known for their unique style, while the brand itself is recognised for its human-centric philosophy, advanced technology and the unique spirit that shines through in every fibre of their operational structure.

With a strong focus on staff training and development, and with big plans to take their in-house training to the next level, Mazda UK appointed Form to support them in developing and bringing to life their first bespoke Mazda Academy training centre in Stewartby, Bedfordshire.

Together with Mazda UK and Waveform Architects we worked collaboratively to create a world class, purpose-built training facility, which will enable them to host and train both commercial and technical training for their dealership partners under one roof.

In keeping with the client’s inspiring brand ethos and heritage, the new workspace provides a versatile, flexible learning environment, incorporating Japanese nuances and themes that reference Mazda’s origins.

The new Mazda Academy combines a practical and engaging design and features a large technical workshop, a digital suite, agile working areas with fully adaptable classrooms, acoustically treated live broadcasting rooms, a private office, and meeting rooms. There is also a striking front of house reception space, a Japanese-themed canteen, and refreshment areas for social breaks.

How we did it

Following a competitive tender process, we were selected by Mazda UK based on our shared commitment to quality and ingrained values. Mazda felt our approach and set up were the perfect fit for their project.

The work involved a full design and build CAT B fit out, transforming a shell and core industrial unit in Stewartby Business Park, which is a new business development near Bedford.

With the expectations set high and with the launch of the all-new Mazda CX-60 plug-in hybrid pending in just a few months ready for the autumn, the work required careful planning and meticulous scheduling to ensure timely delivery.

Working in close partnership with the client team, the client’s incumbent suppliers and our supply-chain partners, we ensured a seamless delivery in line with the client’s vision. This included last minute changes and accommodating additional works packages requested by the client.

It has been a pleasure to work with the team at Form on our new Mazda Academy facility in Stewartby. It has been a genuinely positive and collaborative experience and we are very happy with the quality of the finished result. Form have taken on all the challenges we have set with a proactive approach and at all levels of the organisation, they have been great to work with.

Laying the foundation for the right environment

We started the project by fitting a new mezzanine level to create additional floor space and to separate classrooms and offices from the technical workshop area.

We carried out all the M&E service installations, including zone controlled VRV air conditioning and ventilation, as well as specialist systems within the workshop to support the move from industrial space into a functioning workshop. Electrical installations included new LED lighting with PIR movement sensors, access control systems, CCTV and a new BT fibre link, and we also coordinated full IT integration with Mazda UK systems.

In addition, we installed new fire alarm systems and fire shutters to all windows within the workshop area and installed a new fire escape door to the rear of the building. Creating an opening required modifications to the building structure and sections of the original glazing, which we did without changing the overall aesthetic of the building.

We also ensured all the areas of the Academy were DDA compliant, with ambulant access routes, accessible washrooms and showers, and a mobility access lift leading to the first floor.

The outcome: Training facilities without boundaries

The workshop area is made up of a large technical training space where Technicians and Apprentices can practice and integrate their experience with the advanced knowledge required to work on the latest Mazda cars.

To build the best training environment, we partnered with a premium garage equipment design and installation company Everard, a leading garage furniture manufacturer Dura, and a leading manufacturer in hydraulic vehicle lifts, Rotary.

The final workshop features two car lifts, a compressed air system, bespoke toolbox and storage solutions and a variety of workstations, including an engine strip table. The exhaust extraction system protects staff from harmful fumes.

Within the workshop, there is also a bespoke digital suite and designated training bays. External car parking provides plenty of space for delegates and visitors and are equipped with EV charging stations.

The training area overlooking the workshop from the first floor includes three fully optimised classrooms separated by foldable walls that enable the rooms to be used daily with the added functionality of opening out the space to host larger training sessions. A variety of smaller training rooms on the ground floor provide full flexibility in how the space can be used.

A standout space for the cars of tomorrow

Mazda’s strong brand ethos is instantly recognisable on arrival. The bespoke graphics and signage lift the space and create a memorable and striking brand experience which taps into the core message of the brand and its innovative nature.

In the reception area you can find the iconic Mazda MX-5 RF on display and signage showcasing the development of the Mazda logo. The brand is further integrated throughout the space to enhance Mazda’s values within the Academy – with a favourite feature of ours being the brand history wall in the main staircase.
